IEEE Rail Transit Vehicle Interface Standards Committee

WG3 Monitoring & Diagnostics 1482 meeting 22

Bach-Simpson, 1255 Brydges St., London, Ont., CANADA N5W 2C2

Contact: Dave Currie

1.  Introduction

Attendees: Dave Currie, Rob McHugh, Dave Gregson, Alain Poirier

Bach-Simpson provided facilities and sustenance for the meeting. Rob McHugh introduced himself and introductions continued around the table.

Since Transit Agencies would be expected to cover the expenses for their employees attending meetings; only the chair showed up at his own expense. The problem with this strategy will be reported to the RTVISC Chair.

2. Review of the status of the standard

Scope and Purpose were reviewed to highlight that they must be retained in their present form but the standard’s emphasis is up to the group’s discretion. The WG felt that the document should still be issued as a standard and not a recommended practice. A draft will be ready for the fall full committee review and to allow time for comment resolution an extension to the PAR will need to be applied for before the end of 2002. The other related published standards need to be considered along with IEC-TC9 and APM work.

Lonworks based MDS seems to be out of step with TCN based MDSs. WG9 will formalize all data elements identified by WG3. It was agreed that a minimum set of data elements would be identified to bound a simplistic system.

The latest draft can be accessed from TSD.org.

3. Review of the section-by-section comments

The table on page 2 was completed to verify what is covered in the standard; this table will be removed before posting to TSD.

The structure of the MDS as presented in the tables at the beginning of section 4.0 in the draft standard is to be presented as is, for comment.

Section 6 tables with cross reference to other standards are for discussion purposes only and the reference columns will be removed before ballot.

Data logging and retrieval issues such as media, formats, post-processing are important issues were addressed in the standard.

The index has been cleaned-up.

Sections 9 and 10.3 can reference IEC and RSAC specs for galvanic isolation. Include Test Equipment Interface protocol in Section 9.

4.0 Coordination with other Working Groups

WG2 1474.2 is addressing display/display formats.

A reminder that data collected by the M&DS can be stand-alone but integration into a WAN for post processing will provide maximum benefit.

Levels of reporting (section 5.1) can be to UIC 557 paragraph 1.4 with some revisions by AHJs to orient reporting classes more to rail transit.

WG3 has signal definition charts (section 6) which will be passed on to WG9 to formalize.

5.0 Next Meeting

The group expressed interest in holding the next meeting in 2 months possibly at Metro North. As Rob will have difficulty attending he will investigate APTAs teleconference capabilities. Rob will issue notice and map.
