TSD-Sponsored Apprenticeships & Internships

Thompson School District hosts/hires a variety of Work-Based Learning Opportunities for TSD high school students.  Below are the opportunities for Internships and Apprenticeships, in which students earn CTE/Applied Arts credit.

Apply for all positions in Xello: When available, all positions are posted in Xello under Opportunities.  Students must apply, interview, and be selected/hired before adding the Internship or Apprenticeship to their schedule/transcript.

TSD Innovative Technology Services

Thompson School District Innovative Technology Department offers 2 work-based learning opportunities for high school students: IT Technician Apprenticeship and Technical Support Internship. These are offered frequently throughout the school year and summer.

IT Technician Apprenticeship

  • Duties/Learning Experience: Apprentices serve as a part-time technicians working alongside full time technicians supporting all TSD schools, troubleshoot technical problems, repair district equipment and sofware, while providing excellent customer service to TSD students and staff
  • Earn & Learn:  Apprentices earn wages, receive related technical and professional training, and earn certifications in information technology.  Additionally, students earn 1.5 CTE / Applied Arts credits per semester of apprenticeship.
  • Schedule: This is a Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship (RAP). For successful completion, apprentices complete 2000 hours of work and 144 hours of related training. Apprentices attend school part-time and work part-time and typically work 16-20 hours per week their first year.  Apprenticeships typically take 2-3 years for successful completion.
  • Eligibility:  Apprentices are Juniors or Seniors, age 16+ at the start of apprenticeship. Students must have counselor approval, be on track for on-time graduation, and have flexibility to fit an apprenticeship in their schedule.

IT Technical Support Internship

  • Duties/Learning Experience: Interns primarily fix student devices and provide hardward and software tech support at their home high school, providing excellent customer service
  • Earn & Learn:  Interns earn a Student Device Repair Technician certification and .5 CTE / Applied Arts credits per class period scheduled for internship, per semester. Internships are unpaid, with limited paid internships available periodically during summer.
  • Schedule: Interns work during 1 or more class periods at their school, during the entire school year.  
  • Eligibility:  Open to all TSD high school students. Must apply, interview, and be selected before working with your counselor to add the internship to your schedule.

TSD Learning Services

Thompson School District Learning Services Division/Career & College Readiness Department hosts 2 work-based learning opportunities for high school students:  Classroom Aide Internship and Social Media Marketing Internship.  

Classroom Aide Internship

  • Duties/Learning Experience: Interns work alongside classroom teachers to provide extra support with instructional activities and classroom management, assist with classroom routines, prepare materials, and work with students in small groups or one-on-one
  • Earn & Learn:  Interns earn minimum wage and .5 CTE / Applied Arts credits per class period scheduled for internship, per semester. Interns meet regularly with WBL Specialist and other interns to discuss challenges and debrief experiences. 
  • Schedule: Interns work during 2 or more class periods at an elementary or middle school, during the entire school year.  
  • Eligibility:  Open to Seniors who have successfully completed Teacher Cadet 1 and 2. Flexible schedule with at least 2 class periods available for internship. Strong interest in working with children and becoming an educator. 

Social Media Marketing Internship

  • Duties/Learning Experience: Interns create and share content to promote CTE, WBL, and college concurrent enrollment, capture student interviews, photos, and videos, Design graphics, plan campaigns, and track engagement. Learn from TSD social media and communications staff.
  • Earn & Learn:  Interns earn minimum wage and .5 CTE / Applied Arts credits per semester.  Opportunity to shadow other social media professionals. 
  • Schedule: Interns mainly work at their home high school during 1 class period to create content and work virtually/independently to edit and upload content. Opportunities to attend field trips, career events, and evening events.  About 4 hours per week.  School year only.
  • Eligibility:  Open to Juniors and Seniors, age 16+. Current or past experience with a TSD career & college program. Experience with social media. Schedule availability.

TSD Facility Services

Thompson School District Facility Services Department hosts 1 work-based learning opportunity for high school students:  Summer Stage Production / Auditorium Maintenance Internship

Stage Production/Auditorium Maintenance Internship

  • Duties/Learning Experience: Interns produce sound and lights for summer productions at TVHS, and perform lighting, sound, and other maintenance in TSD auditoriums.
  • Earn & Learn:  Interns earn minimum wage and CTE / Applied Arts credits (minimum of .5 credits, dependent on total hours worked). Learn from a variety of theater and performing arts professionals. 
  • Schedule: Summer internship, approximately 65 total hours, 10-15 hours/week, some nights and weekends. 
  • Eligibility:  Open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors, age 15+. Interest in technical theatre. No experience necessary.
