Mathcounts
Welcome to the Thompson School District MATHCOUNTS Program!
MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through engaging competitions and problem-solving activities. Our program is designed to inspire excellence, confidence, and curiosity in mathematics among students in grades 6-8.
Program Structure:
Levels of Competition:
- School Level: Students compete within their own schools to advance to the next stage.
- Chapter Level: Top performers from each school compete against others in their geographic area.
- State Level: Winners from each chapter advance to the state competition.
- National Level: State champions compete at the national level for top honors.
Competition Rounds:
- Sprint Round: Focuses on speed and accuracy with 30 problems to be solved in 40 minutes without a calculator.
Sample:
- Target Round: Emphasizes problem-solving and reasoning; students solve pairs of problems with calculators allowed.
Sample:
- Team Round: Encourages collaboration as teams work together to solve complex problems.
- Countdown Round: A fast-paced oral competition for top-scoring individuals.
