Although school districts are only required to bus special education students and homeless students who have changed attendance areas, the Thompson School District provides transportation for:

  • All elementary pupils living one and one-half (1.5) miles from school of attendance, except that only one-way bus services to or from school may be provided for kindergarten pupils,
  • Middle school pupils if they live beyond two and one-half (2.5) miles from school of attendance,
  • Senior high pupils (grades 9-10) if they live beyond three (3.0) miles from their school of attendance.

Eleventh and twelfth graders will not be bused except in special hardship cases.

Distance is measured by established walkways, streets or highways. To maximize efficiencies and stretch the transportation dollars as far as possible, routes are arterialized. Buses do not travel each street or subdivision. Wherever feasible, bus stops are located on main roads to reduce the number of miles on each route and the time it takes to run the route.

The District may provide for the transportation of pupils who live within the stated limits who have special problems such as:

  • Extreme safety hazards along school route,
  • Special education classes,
  • Physical conditions verified by physician's statement.

Adopted December 6, 1995
