FF, Naming District Sites and Facilities
Each school, building, building complex and athletic stadium (individually hereinafter referred to as “Site” or collectively as “Sites”) within Thompson School District R2-J and all auditoriums, gymnasiums, media centers, meeting rooms, athletic fields or other areas within, attached or adjacent to such Sites (individually hereinafter referred to as “Facility” or collectively as “Facilities”) shall be named for the locality or community within which they are located; animals; significant or pertinent events; or individuals making significant contributions to the District as further defined in the accompanying regulation. The names of all District Sites and Facilities must be approved by official action of the Board of Education.
The process of naming new Sites shall be initiated by the Superintendent in accordance with this policy and accompanying regulation. The process of renaming Sites or naming or renaming Facilities may be initiated by the Superintendent at the Board’s direction or if the Superintendent receives a petition with a minimum of 150 signatures of persons residing in the District requesting such action.
When Sites or Facilities are to be named or renamed, the Superintendent will appoint a committee to oversee the naming or renaming process and make naming recommendations to the Board of Education in accordance with the accompanying regulation. The committee will include a representative of the District and at least five other citizens in the community, two of whom should be individuals residing in the geographic area of the Sites or Facilities. Citizens, Board members and school personnel may submit names for consideration by the committee. The committee will use the consensus method in making decisions.
The committee shall provide three names for the Board to choose from, and may recommend which of these it most prefers as the name for the Sites or Facilities.
The Board shall have the final decision in the naming or renaming of Sites or Facilities. In the case of new Sites, the Board shall officially name the Sites on or before the bid is let for construction of the Sites. The Board shall officially rename Sites or name or rename Facilities at the earliest possible date but no later than before the beginning of the school year.
In selecting names, special consideration will be given to those names that will have special meaning to students and citizens and will enhance the education and climate of the Sites or Facilities.
No two Sites or Facilities in the District shall be given the same name.
