IHCDB, Postsecondary Options Accelerating Students Through Concurrent Enrollment (ASCENT)
ASCENT allows students to participate in concurrent enrollment in the year directly following their 12th grade year. District students have the opportunity to apply for participation in the ASCENT program, which is designed to increase the percentage of students who participate in postsecondary education, especially among low income and traditionally underserved populations. However, all interested students are encouraged to apply for the program.
Eligibility
A student is eligible for ASCENT if the student:
- Has completed, or is on schedule to complete, at least 12 credit hours (semester hours or equivalent) of transcripted, credit-bearing, college-level postsecondary coursework* prior to completing the 12th grade year. Remedial/developmental education college courses do not qualify as part of the 12 required credits.
- Is college ready, and not in need of basic skills coursework in accordance with the enrolled pathway.
- Completes an Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) prior to declaring intent to participate in ASCENT.
- Applies to and is accepted into a postsecondary degree program at a qualified Colorado institution of higher education.
- Has been selected for participation by the high school principal or equivalent school administrator.
- Has not been designated an ASCENT program participant in any prior year (can only participate in ASCENT for 1 academic year).
ASCENT Slot Determination
To be considered for a slot in the ASCENT program, interested students must meet the eligibility criteria above as well as any other established District criteria and deadlines, including submission of an ASCENT application and a Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) to the district’s Department of Concurrent Enrollment.
By May 1 of each academic year, the district submits a request to the Colorado Department of Education for a certain number of slots for students to be allocated to the district for the ASCENT program. If the district does not receive the requested number of slots, the district will give enrollment preference to students based on financial need.
