IJ, Instructional Resources and Materials
As the governing body of the school district, the Board of Education is legally responsible for the selection of all instructional materials. Since the Board is a policy-making body, it delegates authority for selecting instructional and library materials to the professionally trained personnel of the district.
Selection of materials for school classrooms and libraries should involve affected principals, teachers, department heads, and media specialists.
The Board believes that it is the responsibility of the district to:
- Provide materials that will enrich and support the curriculum and personal needs of the users, taking into consideration their varied interests, abilities, learning styles, and ages;
- Provide materials that will stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literary appreciation, aesthetic values, and ethical standards;
- Provide a background of information that will enable students to make intelligent judgments in their daily lives;
- Provide materials on opposing sides of issues so that students may develop, under guidance, the practice of critical analysis;
- Provide materials that represent the role of cultural diversity in the development of our American heritage and its continued importance in shaping the future of our country;
- Place principle above personal opinion and reason above prejudice in the selection of materials of highest quality in order to ensure a comprehensive media collection appropriate for the users.
The above principles, adapted from the School Library Bill of Rights, shall serve as a guide in the selection of all instructional and library materials.
