The purposes of the district library media program are to help students meet and exceed standards and to help teachers improve their teaching effectiveness.

To insure that the media program is able to perform its functions, the Board of Education shall approve sufficient funds as recommended by the superintendent.

School Library Media Centers

The school library media program is an integral part of the educational process in providing instructional resources and services that support the district curriculum and the educational goals of individual schools. Working in partnership with teachers and students, the library media staff seeks to provide successful learning experiences for all students.

One goal of the school library media program is to provide students with skills and opportunities to access, evaluate and apply information and ideas, a process that will serve them in all content areas while developing competent, independent learners for the future.

To help achieve this goal, school library media programs provide:

  1. A learning environment that contributes to students’ confidence and desire to learn

  2. Hands on experience and instruction in electronic searching using the school library media center’s electronic catalog

  3. A balanced and comprehensive collection that reflects the district policy for material selection and fills the needs of the school

  4. Access to local and remote resources, including those available through district Media Services, interlibrary loan, electronic databases and telecommunications

  5. Assistance in the use of technology to access information

  6. Guidance in evaluating sources and using information responsibly (including citing sources and observing copyright law)

  7. Opportunities to create quality products that illustrate knowledge and understanding

A second goal of the school library media program is to assist teachers by making professional resources available at the building. Through collaboration and planning with the classroom teacher, the library staff can provide direction in using informational and instructional technologies to facilitate effective teaching. This service can be supplemented and amplified through links with district-level media services and outside resources.

District Media Services

District Media Services supports school library media programs by providing resources, services and technology staff development and works with district administration to coordinate policies and programs.

District Media Services works with school library media specialists and library media clerks to help achieve each school’s library media program goals and to coordinate programs to ensure that students in all schools have opportunities to access information. They also provide support for the schools’ electronic and circulation networks and maintain a central electronic catalog of all schools’ library media print materials for sharing of resources. Bibliographies of recommended materials that reflect the district selection policy are provided to school library media staff to guide purchases made at the school level.
