The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission announced their selection of the 2024 theme: “Capturing the Dream.” In one of his most famous speeches, “I Have a Dream,” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke about his dream for an America where freedom and justice would be available to all people. 

This year’s art and writing contest is an opportunity for you to share your experiences and show your creativity in demonstrating how you are “Capturing the Dream” to honor Dr. MLK, Jr. and his legacy.

Art Contest Details

Create a 2-D or 3-D art piece that shows how you are capturing Dr. MLK, Jr.’s dream of equality, freedom, or justice.

Art Contest Entry Guidelines

  • 2-D Art entries must be single-sided
  • Use the medium of your choice (drawing, painting, photography, collage, sculpture, etc.)
  • Art contest entry forms must be received by December 1, 2023 (Extended deadline December 11, 2023), at 4:30 p.m. by:
    • Dropping off your entry at the admin building at 800 S. Taft Ave, or
    • Asking your teacher to submit your entry for you (with enough time), or
    • taking a picture of your work and upload art entry picture in the Google Form (if needed)

Writing Contest Details

Grades Pre-K-2:
Write about something you do that shows Dr. MLK, Jr.’s dream of equality, freedom, or justice.

Grades 3-12:
Write an original piece about how you are capturing Dr. MLK, Jr.’s dream of equality, freedom, or justice.

Writing Contest Entry Guidelines

  • Written entries should be one page maximum, single-sided
  • An original essay (narrative, informational, opinion), poem, or song (lyrics, sheet of music, etc.)
  • Writing contest entry forms must be received by December 1, 2023 (Extended deadline December 11, 2023), at 4:30 p.m. by:

All contest entries must be received by December 11, 2023 (Extended deadline) by Veronica White, Department of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the TSD Administration Building, 800 S. Taft Avenue. All winners will be personally notified by December 15, 2023. Winners will be recognized along with their work at the in-person Loveland Community MLK Event on January 15, 2024.
