Volunteer FAQs

All volunteers, regardless of frequency or time volunteered, must at least go through the sex offender background check. One time guests (see below) must present their driver's license to the school secretary for an on-site screening. Anyone who volunteers more than once, must go through a full background check through the volunteer registration system.

Volunteers who will only serve once and are considered a guest do not have to register. A guest is someone who has been invited by district employees for one of the following reasons:

• Classroom presenter
• Read Aloud Day reader
• Non-district crisis responder working with students and/or staff
• Career Day presenter
• Science Fair judge
• Assembly participant(s)
• Any other person invited to the school on a limited basis (once or twice) to be a part of the educational experience

If you do not meet one of the above requirements, you must register.

Each school has a computer that volunteers can use to register. See the school secretary for assistance. You may also go to the district administration building and use computers there and gain assistance.

All volunteers are required to have an email account now due to the thousands of volunteers with whom we need to communicate regarding required follow-up background checks and important volunteer alerts. Each volunteer receives a follow-up background check every three years to ensure the safety of our children. Volunteers receive three emails regarding this requirement with a request to verify. If they do not respond to any of the emails at the end of 67 days, they will be deleted from the volunteer system and unable to volunteer until they receive a follow-up background check.

No. The background check will be run using your first, middle, and last name as well as your date of birth.

An individual’s conviction, deferred judgment, and pending charges of any of the following will automatically result in denial of volunteer service, regardless of how long ago the conviction occurred:

• Felony conviction
• Any domestic violence convictions (including assault and restraining orders)
• Any child abuse/reckless endangerment convictions
• Two or more DUI convictions
• Sex Offender

The following could also result in denial of volunteer service:

• Any other information that suggests an applicant's volunteer service may be incompatible with the protection of student health, welfare or safety

Conviction is defined as: A conviction by a jury or by a court; the forfeiture of any bail, bond, or any other security deposited to secure appearance by a person charged with a felony or misdemeanor; the payment of a fine for any of the above listed convictions; or a plea of no contest.

If an individual has a charge for any of the areas listed below that does not have a final disposition, the case is still open. This means the individual may be required to follow court conditions that monitor behavior until charges can be dismissed or that the case is still going through court procedures. In either situation, charges may not be dismissed when the case finally closes. Therefore, individuals must have a final disposition in the case that dismisses or clears them of the charge before they can volunteer.
