History

Winona Elementary School is named after Winona Washburn Taylor (1855-1945), the daughter of early Loveland settler Judge John Washburn. In late 1874, John Washburn officially platted a town site near the present-day Winona Elementary and named the town “Winona” in honor of his daughter. The settlement was short-lived and eventually became part of present-day Loveland. Ms. Washburn became a well-known Loveland pioneer and educator, and the school community is very proud to honor her legacy.
